Courtney of French Country Cottage shares her holiday decorating inspiration with Balsam Hill

Courtney of French Country Cottage has a simple formula for decorating her home: it needs to feel comfortable and, most of all, it has to feel like you.

From her mom she learned this nugget of wisdom. ‘Even if it breaks every rule out there and mixes five different crazy patterns and styles, if it makes you happy when you walk in, that is the most important thing,’ Courtney relates in her interview with Balsam Hill. Learn more about her timeless style.

BH: What is your favorite part about being a mother? What is the most rewarding and most challenging aspect of it?

Courtney: There are so many things I love about being a mother. My kids, obviously! And so much more. Being a mother is such an amazing and wonderful gift. Seeing those little babies grow and learn and follow their dreams – there is nothing like it and it is truly an incredible blessing to be their mom.

BH: How has motherhood changed your style and design aesthetics?

Courtney: It hasn’t really changed much overall. I have white furniture, french pillows and delicate chairs even with three kids. I think a home needs to feel comfortable and like ‘you’ in order for it to truly allow you to relax and enjoy it so I have always decorated with what I love. You can keep anything too breakable or special somewhere in your home that is less busy and go with what is you and makes you happy.

BH: How has your mother inspired your decorating style? Would you mind sharing some decorating advice she’s given you with us?

Courtney: I grew up in a house where things were always changing. I would go to school one morning and come home to find the dining room was now the living room and vice versa. My mom was always moving things and changing things and thinking of new layouts or designs for our house. I think that the best advice – which is what she lives by – is to do what you love in your room. Even if it breaks every ‘rule’ out there and mixes five different crazy patterns and styles, if it makes you happy when you walk in, that is the most important thing.

BH: What advice has your mother given you that you would also like to give to your children?

Courtney: To go out there and try something new. I must have tried playing every sport in the book before narrowing down to a couple that were a perfect fit. You never know if something is for you if you don’t give it a try.

BH: Is there an activity you do now that still reminds you of something you did with your mother as a child?

Courtney: Going to Disneyland. It was our family trip every year when I was growing up and my husband and I have been taking our kids to Disneyland since they were little, too. Great memories all around.

BH: Do you have any springtime traditions you would like to pass on to your children and grandchildren?

Courtney: Gardening and planting flowers is definitely something that I love doing in the spring and is something that my daughter and I have done together since she was little. She loves to help fill the window boxes and pots with bursts of color and take them from winter to spring in just a few minutes.

BH: How do you and your family prepare your home for spring? Is there a specific piece of decor you put out that signifies spring has arrived?

Courtney: I tend to decorate in a similar manner all year long – with the exception of the holidays. I keep things fairly simple and natural. For adding touches of spring, maybe I would create a vignette on the mantel; add fresh flowers or pots of fresh herb topiaries in the kitchen or a fresh wreath to warm up a room.

BH: What’s your idea of a perfect Mother’s Day celebration?

Courtney: I think it’s about enjoying a nice day together and then having dinner with my family at home. Since my kids are older and my oldest has already moved out, it is definitely a treat when they come over and all of our family is all together. Lots of laughter and good times. I enjoy it so much.
