As a home décor blogger, one question I get asked a lot this time of year is, “How do I decorate my home after the holidays?” That’s why I thought of sharing some after-Christmas décor ideas for those non-holiday winter months. I also included ways to repurpose Christmas decorations beyond the festive season.

Like many of you, I have most of my Christmas home décor packed up and put away—but not all of them. With a creative twist, many Christmas items can be used throughout winter and even beyond. Let me show you around my home and share a few of my ideas for getting longer life out of your décor.

Incorporate Winter Greenery

Leaving out some winter greens is an easy way to keep both life and color in your home. This can include repurposed Christmas trees, wreaths, and garlands. Simply strip the greens of their more festive or Christmas-themed embellishments to turn them into welcoming and cozy décor that can be enjoyed for months and months.

In my living room, I hung a Balsam Fir wreath on a cabinet filled with books, knick-knacks, and blankets. Sprigs of faux greens are tucked around the shelves and placed in vases for a natural effect.

Some of my evergreen tabletop trees are now on the mantel in my family room. This display feels seasonal, but not Christmas-y. Paired with some oversized pinecones, paper snowflakes, and candles, these upcycled Christmas trees create a lovely winter scene that fills this space with personality.

Add a Candle-lit Glow

One of my favorite parts about the holiday season is the glow of lights. Since it still gets dark pretty early in the evening, I’m all about keeping as many candles lit as I can.

While I do have some real candles, one of my favorite things to use is the Miracle Flame LED candles. They provide the glow and flicker of a real candle without the worry and stress of an actual flickering flame. I have been using these for quite some time and I can’t begin to tell you how many people think they are real. Love that!

You’ll see here that I placed candles on the mantel in my living room and the mantel in my family room.

And to be perfectly honest, if the sparkle of fairy lights brings you joy during this time of year (or any time of year for that matter), I see nothing wrong with leaving a few strands up as décor. You do you!

Repurpose Christmas Ornaments for Added Sparkle

As you might have guessed, I always miss the sparkle and glitter of the holidays in January and February. That’s why I still like to include a little bling and glam wherever I can. This year, I was so excited about leaving two of my favorite Balsam Hill ornaments on display for longer.

While this idea can be used anywhere in your home, I’ve upcycled Christmas ornaments as décor on my living room bookcases.

  • Snowflake ornament used as an accent for a wooden box

I filled a bowl with pinecones then added a few of these Mirrored Geometric Ornaments. I love the sparkle they add as I move about the room. With the Beaded Snowflake Ornaments, I spruced up household items like this vintage wooden trunk. It was as simple as using a piece of twine to attach the ornament to the box. A sprig of faux pine completes the look.

Enjoy the Beauty of Lanterns All Year Round

While I especially love lanterns in my fall and winter décor, they are decorative items that I keep up all year long. Balsam Hill has a beautiful selection no matter your style.

In my living room, I used this set of White Berry Spruce Lanterns on the hearth of my fireplace. Not only do they add beautiful visual interest, but the flickering glow from the candles creates a cozy aesthetic.

The décor inside these lanterns is beautiful but minimal, making it easy to swap out for the seasons. With a few minor changes, I can enjoy these lanterns throughout the year.

And that’s a wrap!

May all of these tips and ideas give you inspiration on how to repurpose Christmas decorations for the winter and beyond. I hope you’ll see that with a little creativity, you can enjoy the magic of the season for as long as you’d like.
