When it comes to celebrating Christmas in July, nobody does it better than our friends south of the equator. Up here in the northern hemisphere, the balmy climate gives you the perfect excuse to trade in your snow boots for a pair of flip flops, your eggnog for a tropical cooler, and your snowman for sand castles. With the exuberant summer sun beaming down on you, you can let your worries melt away like snow, head out to the beach, and dive into the cool water. This is what the summer holidays are all about: a different kind of chill. Balsam Hill gives you simple tips for having a blast with a Christmas party at the beach.

Gather Friends with a Beach-Inspired Invitation

You can feature a heat-resistant Jack Frost kicking back under the sun, Santa Claus sipping piña colada while relaxing in a lounge chair, or a magnificent sandcastle adorned with Christmas balls and stockings. You can also write your invitation by hand, roll it up, and stick it inside a clear bottle. Or you can simply glue a small decorative starfish on a regular invitation from your local crafts store. If you’re running out of time or simply doubting your creativity, you can find some available online.

Delight your family and friends even more by adding witty, reworded rhymes or song lyrics, such as this snippet from a Christmas pop rock song:

I don’t want a lot for Christmas…
Well, maybe just a party at the beach.
I don’t care about the presents…
I just want the sun and the deep blue sea.

Replace Traditional with Tropical Christmas Decorations

Use a palm tree for your Christmas tree and adorn it with starfish and sea shells strung together. We also recommend using string lights that are either clear glass or have beautiful coastal colors. These spherical accent lights from PureModern are powered by solar energy. While they are used mainly for the outdoors, they can also double as baubles for your regular Christmas tree in December.

You can also just build your Christmas tree from sand and trim it with ornaments found at the beach. Again, decorate with sea shells and coral accents, and use a starfish for the topper.

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry!

For an Australian Christmas-inspired picnic, replace eggnog with champagne and bring pavlova instead of plum pudding. Be thoughtful of guests who may want to go easy on the booze by providing healthy alternatives, such as refreshing smoothies and fruit juices. Don’t forget the red and green cocktail umbrellas! Write down your summer-inspired menu on a surfboard, if you’re feeling extra creative.

Come nightfall, you can light a bonfire. Essential to beach parties, bonfires bring a nostalgic Christmas vibe. They conjure up images of your warm family gatherings by the fireplace, only this time you’re cozying up around an outdoor fire pit. This is the time to exchange gifts, share fun stories, roast marshmallows, and enjoy decadent s’mores, all while listening to soft holiday music.

So who needs snow when you can have the sand between your toes? This summer holiday, enjoy frolicking at the beach and have a merry, summer-inspired Christmas in July!
