Christmas Decorating Ideas for Large Business Spaces

A large business space gives you a lot of flexibility when decorating for special occasions. The location can be an asset at Christmastime, allowing you to go big on decorated Christmas trees, greenery, light displays, and more. When styled well, it will not only attract potential customers but also spread holiday cheer among colleagues.

However, with all this potential comes a few challenges. When dealing with a lot of square footage or tall ceilings, you need coordinated and organized decorations. Read on for Christmas decorating ideas for spacious business areas like lobbies, restaurants, shops, and more.

Create a striking entryway

Create a memorable first impression with a cheery and welcoming façade. Line entryways with pre-lit miniature trees, lanterns, or oversized decorations. Increase the density of the décor as they get closer to the entrance to visually draw customers into the space. Then, adorn doors and windows with festive wreaths and greenery styled for the season.

Choose an appropriate Christmas tree size

A Christmas tree will always be the star attraction of a holiday display. When choosing a tree, make sure its shape and height suit the scale of the room. Wide spaces with high ceilings will look best with a tall, full-shaped tree. Meanwhile, entryways or corridors will benefit most from a slim Christmas tree.

When choosing the right Christmas tree height, a good rule of thumb is to allow at least 12 inches clearance between the top of your tree and the ceiling. This will provide ample space for a standard-sized Christmas tree topper of about 6 inches. If you have a larger topper, consider this in your measurement. Leave at least a 6-inch allowance from the tip of your topper to the ceiling.

Christmas trees 8 to 9 feet tall are suited for rooms with high ceilings. 10 to 14 feet trees are ideal in public spaces and establishments with vaulted ceilings. Meanwhile, 15 to 18 feet trees will look best in grand settings like large hotel lobbies, courtyards, and ballrooms.

Hang décor from the ceiling and walls

Decorations in business settings are usually placed on top of tables, counters, or on the floor. What many don’t realize is that spaces with high ceilings are often underutilized. Make the most of these by creating a backdrop that complements your holiday display. Hang Christmas string lights, decorative garlands, and ornaments from the ceiling or walls. Suspend them at different heights to create an interesting contrast.

Add drama to stairways with swaths of greenery

Stairways are the perfect place for impressive swaths of greenery garlands, big bows, and even Christmas stockings. However, before you start decorating this passageway, consider its architectural style. For example, a craftsman-style banister with a long, straight handrail will look best with traditional decorations. Meanwhile, a sweeping curved railing goes well with more contemporary décor.

To achieve proportion, style decorations in a consistent pattern from one end of the railing to the other. For instance, choose either a straight or draping placement for your garland. Then, add your smaller accents like ribbons or stockings at equal intervals. This will create a balanced look.

Use energy-efficient lights

Lighting up a large space means higher energy consumption. If you haven’t adopted LED lights yet, now is the perfect time. LED Christmas lights are brighter and last longer compared to traditional incandescent lights. They cost more upfront, but they consume less energy.  These bulb types will save you electricity in the long run, which is a win for any business.

Many of Balsam Hill’s pre-lit Christmas trees come with energy-efficient LED lights. Unlike the blue tones associated with most LED lights in the market, our exclusive Candlelight® Clear LED technology casts the same warm glow as incandescent lights. In addition, we also offer trees with multicolored lights for a more whimsical display. If you want to enjoy the best of both worlds, choose our trees with Color+Clear lights. Switch from clear to colored or light up both at the same time using a remote control.

Meanwhile, Balsam Hill’s LED Christmas light strings come in various styles. Choose from classic warm or multicolored LEDs with innovative features. Select models allow you to choose from different light modes, set the timer, and operate with a remote control.

If you want something out of the ordinary to delight your customers, pick one of our Twinkly® light strings. These intelligent LEDs allow you to customize your own light show through a mobile app. Several of our trees come pre-lit with Twinkly lights, too.

Keep your theme consistent

When it comes to decorating large settings, it’s easy to get sidetracked with a lot of ideas given the vastness of the space. The best place to start is your Christmas tree trimmings.
