Spring Getaways: Flower Festivals 2013

For the weary traveler, spring offers an opportune time to see the world in all its vibrant colors. Traveling in spring rejuvenates one’s spirit. The perfect weather allows you to bask in the outdoors and witness different corners of the world – from San Diego to Washington DC, from Holland to Japan – come to life with the freshest blooms.  The road is set. The skies are clear. Luxuriate in the finest of seasons and visit these world-class flower festivals.

Tulip Festivals

Lisse, a quaint town south of Amsterdam, has hosted the most famous tulip festival in the world for over 60 years. The festival commences on March 21 and runs until May. The garden of Keukenhof  showcases an invigorating display not only of tulips but also of hyacinths and daffodils.

You can turn your visit into a romantic getaway with a stay at the picturesque Landgoed Duin & Kruidberg estate. The hotel exudes a storybook charm because of its bucolic atmosphere.

This unique sensory experience – the vibrancy, the fragrance, the romance – best defines Holland.

The tulip festival has become so popular the world over that even in the eponymous town of Holland, Michigan, a similar event is held in May to honor the community’s Dutch heritage. Enjoy a taste of Holland’s culinary delights as well as their music and dance, and pick up a few souvenir items at the Arts and Crafts Fair of the Tulip Time Festival.

Cherry Blossom Festivals

The delicate cherry blossom, or sakura in Japanese, begins to bud as early as February and reaches full bloom as late as May, depending on how temperate the climate is and which place you visit.

Embark on a tour in the cosmopolitan city of Tokyo, where you can have a picnic under the trees. Travel all the way to the mystical city of Kyoto for an enriching cultural experience or a spiritual sojourn that includes an inspiring visit to the temples and participation in a green tea ceremony.

Similarly, the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC celebrates this bloom as a symbol of the friendship between the United States and Japan. The five-week festival draws in an average of 700,000 tourists each year.

Coronado Flower Show

If you wish to enjoy seasonal blooms but are not too keen on taking long-haul flights across the globe, you can delight instead in horticultural wonders on the island of Coronado in the chic city of San Diego. Take part in the largest tented flower show in the country in April: the Coronado Flower Show combines good food and drink, live entertainment, exhibitions, and competitions for garden enthusiasts.

A showcase of color and fragrance, flower festivals provide the traveler an enriching experience that rejuvenates the senses. On your next spring getaway, relax and take pleasure in the season’s most delicate blooms.
